Physio Taping

In 1979 the Kinesio Taping method was developed by Dr. Kenzo Kase, and was popularised soon after. After discovering the rigidness of regular sports tape Dr. Kenzo invented a type of tape that was more similar to the texture and elasticity of human skin and muscle. Dr. Kase developed many types of new strapping tape which were all suitable for different issues. This allowed the users to have more freedom of movement and less restraint.

As tapes are left on for extended periods of time, it was vital that they not only mimic human skin, but also that they stay on while still allowing the skin underneath to breathe. This was accomplished after years of development, and now the tape can be applied in many different ways and stay on for days at a time.

What is Kinesio Taping?

The Kinesio Taping Method is a therapeutic taping technique which alleviates pain and facilitates lymphatic drainage by microscopically lifting the skin. This lifting affect forms convolutions in the skin increasing interstitial space and allowing for decreased inflammation in affected areas. Based upon research and years of clinical use, The Kinesio Taping Method specifically applies Kinesio tape based on evaluation and assessment to dictate a specific application. Kinesio Tape applications can be applied in hundreds of ways and has the ability to reduce pain and inflammation, promote post-surgical healing, optimize performance, prevent injury and promote good circulation and can assist the body’s natural healing process.

Rigid Taping:

This is used primarily to stabilise Joints. It provides mechanical support, compression, and feedback of the injured area to the individual. This tape is typically applied and left on for 24 hours. Common uses of rigid taping:

  • Sprained Ankles
  • Knee Injuries
  • Acute Shoulder Injuries
  • Acute Lower Back injuries
  • Patellofemoral Joint Syndrome
Kinesio Taping (K – Tape):

Kinesio tape is a more contemporary method of taping. It has really come to popularity since its widespread use in the 2008 Beijing Olympic games. The proposed benefits of kinesio taping included de-loading injured muscles, increasing circulation, promoting lymphatic flow and providing stimulatory feedback. Promising studies have shown the benefits of kinesio including its benefits to knee osteoarthritis. This tape can be left on for 2-4 days and is waterproof.

Common uses include:

  • Muscle injuries
  • De-loading fatigued/injured muscles
  • Knee osteoarthritis
  • Runners knee
  • Rotator Cuff Injuries
When Removing Your Tape:

Do not pull the tape back directly at a 90-degree angle as this can risk tearing off your skin. This is particularly important if you have a history of delicate, soft or frail skin. The correct way is to pull back towards the angle of the tape. Removing the tape is often easier after a hot shower or bath.

Wrong- This person is pulling
at a 90-degree angle.

Correct- This person is pulling back
towards the line of the tape.

WELLNESS

Feeling well in today’s COVID world is a real challenge. The World Health Organization defines wellness as: “…a state of complete physical, mental, and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity”.
At Performance Physio Mareeba, our educated and caring team strive to help you with the wellness factor of your life. All of our team members from Reception staff to Physiotherapists have a mission to make your experience comfortable and positive. Physiotherapy is a hands-on profession using our researched skills to move joints, massage, release muscles, improve function and biomechanically analyze your problems to help chase your pain away. In addition, we use acupuncture, ice and heat modalities, electrical equipment, taping and specific exercises for your problems and maintenance. All of our clients are given exercises and self-help strategies for posture, work, hobbies, and sport related areas. Healthy ageing is definitely a big part of life as we are now living 25 years longer than the early 1900’s. We encourage exercise as a part of daily maintenance. If exercise were a pill, we would all take one twice a day! Exercise cleans out our pumps and pipes, builds muscle, and stops degeneration; all accompanied with a healthy diet. To assist our clients with exercise, we hold a ‘Strong Healthy Bones Exercise Class’ twice a week designed for the 50+ age group. We encourage people to join any group exercise available in our communities to keep moving and assist us with our social connections. All of our Physiotherapists at Performance Physio Mareeba look at your health holistically and we are continuously striving for patient satisfaction with your personal goals.
